Question : BROADBAND SPEED BY MTNL AND BSNL



(a) whether the service providers of broadband services including Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) are not giving the declared broadband speed to the subscribers;

(b) if, so the reasons therefor; and

(c) the action proposed to be taken by the Government is this regard?

STATEMENT TO BE LAID ON THE TABLE OF THE LOK SABHA IN RESPECT OF PARTS (a) TO (c) OF THE LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. 147 FOR 10TH MARCH, 2008 REGARDING `BROADBAND SPEED BY MTNL AND BSNL`

(a) &(b) As per Quality of Service (QoS) parameters prescribed by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the service provider has to ensure that the download speed of Broadband connection from the Point of Presence (PoP) of the service provider to user is greater than 80% of the subscribed speed. TRAI has reported that as per the quarterly performance monitoring report submitted by the broadband service providers, including MTNL and BSNL, for the quarter ending 30.9.2007, all the major broadband service providers including MTNL and BSNL have met the benchmark.

(c) Does not arise in view of (a) & (b) above.
