Question : Development of Handicrafts Sector

(a) whether the arts and crafts are struggling to survive in the country particularly in Madhya Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Haryana, Bihar, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Assam and other North-Eastern States and if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor;

(b) the details of Handicraft Service Centre established under the office of Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) for the development of Handicraft sector at the central level in the country especially in Amravati, Assam and other North-Eastern States along with the achievements made during the last three years; and

(c) the State-wise details of the assistance received by the artisans through these Handicrafts Service Centres in Assam and other North-Eastern States during the last three years along with the improvement made in the lives of Handicraft artisans through these centres?

(a): No, Sir.

(b) & (c): Presently there is 1 Regional office at Guwahati and 10 Handicrafts Service Centres (HSCs) in Guwahati, Gauripur, Jorhat, Agartala, Shillong, Kohima, Itanagar, Imphal, Gangtok and Aizawal. The Amravati (Maharashtra) region comes under the Jurisdiction of HSC, Nagpur. The State-wise number of programmes conducted and number of artisans benefitted in the North Eastern states is annexed at Annexure.
