Question : Sharing of Signals by Private Broadcasters

(a) whether viewers have not been able to watch on free-to-air basis of sporting events of national importance due to lack of sharing of signals by private broadcasters with Doordarshan;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the action taken by the Government thereon;

(c) whether the Government proposes to bring the Sports Broadcasting Signals (Mandatory Sharing with Prasar Bharati) (Amendment) Bill, 2018 and if so, the details thereof; and

(d) the other steps being taken by the Government in this regard?

(a) & (b) Prasar Bharati has informed that no such violation under Sports Broadcasting Signals (Mandatory Sharing with Prasar Bharati) Act, 2007 has come to the notice of Prasar Bharati.
(c) & (d) Yes Madam. With a view to ensure access to the largest number of viewers, on a free to air basis, of sporting events of national importance through mandatory sharing of sports broadcasting signals with Prasar Bharati, this Ministry has prepared a draft Sports Broadcasting Signals (Mandatory Sharing With Prasar Bharati) (Amendment) Bill, 2018 to amend the Section 3(1) of the Sports Broadcasting Signals (Mandatory Sharing With Prasar Bharati) Act, 2007. The details of the draft Bill, have been placed in the public domain to solicit comments from General Public/ Stakeholders on the draft Bill.
