STATEMENT
STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PART (a) TO (d) OF THE LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION
NO. 98 FOR 01.03.2011 REGARDING URBAN TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE
(a): No assessment has been made regarding effect of increasing number of private
vehicles in cities on environment and transport system.
(b): Does not arise in view of (a) above.
(c): Realizing the seriousness of rapidly growing problem of urban transportation,
the central Government has taken active steps like formulation of National Urban
Transport Policy (NUTP), financing of buses for Urban Transport, Bus Rapid Transit
System Projects, traffic transit management centres under Urban Transport under
Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) and sanction of metro
railway projects for various cities.
(d): These steps taken by the Government have improved the mobility in cities
as well as transformed the urban transport scene across the country.
