(a) to (d) National Sports Federations (NSFs) are autonomous bodies registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 / Companies Act, etc. They are responsible and accountable for the overall management, direction, control, regulation, promotion, development and sponsorship of the discipline for which they are recognized by the concerned International Federation.
The Government recognizes National Sports Federations at the national level for promotion and development of sports as per the laid down procedure in the National Sports Development Code of India, 2011 (NSDCI). NSDCI requires NSFs to follow healthy management practices, accountability, transparency, impartial and transparent selection procedures, age and tenure restrictions of office bearers, basic universal principles of good governance in sports, proper accounting procedures, prevention of age fraud & sexual harassment of women, and holding of elections as per model election guidelines. Government insists on observance of the provisions of NSDCI by the NSFs to maintain their recognition on year to year basis and become eligible to receive financial and other forms of support from the Government of India.
Further, annual targets for training of athletes for high performance and their participation in competition is approved for different NSFs by this Ministry in the annual exercise of preparing Annual Calendar for Training and Competitions (ACTCs). The financial assistance is provided keeping in view the approved ACTC. The mechanism of reviewing the performance of NSFs is in-built in the ACTCs.
