(a) the status of construction activities planned under the Kaladan Multi Modal Transit Project (KMMTP) and their expected dates of completion;

(b) the financial outlay proposed and incurred by the Ministry thereunder;

(c) whether any assessment of the likely benefits of the said project to India have been made;

(d) if so, the details thereof; and

(e) the manner in which the said project is likely to enhance bilateral ties between India and Myanmar?

(a) to (d) The Kaladan Multi Modal Transit Transport Facility envisages connectivity between Indian ports on the eastern seaboard and Sittwe Port in Myanmar and then through riverine transport and by road to Mizoram. The work on Sittwe Port, which began in December 2010, is expected to be completed by mid-2013. The Detailed Engineering Report for the road component is under preparation. The project has been approved at a total cost of Rs. 535 crores. The project is expected to enhance bilateral trade, and contribute to the development and prosperity of the people living in the ‘land locked’ North Eastern region of India.
