Question : IMPROVEMENT OF ROADS



(a) whether the Government are aware that 32.5 lakh kms. of State Roads across the country are in bad condition due to lack of proper maintenance and paucity of funds;

(b) if so, whether the Government have any plan to improve the condition of said roads;

(c) if so, the details thereof; and

(d) if not, the reasons therefor ?

(a) to (d) The Ministry is primarily responsible for the development and maintenance of National Highways only. The development and maintenance of State roads and provision of adequate funds for the same are the responsibility of the respective State Governments. The Central Government however provides assistance to the State Governments for development of State roads through the Central Road Fund. Presently, the Central Government is giving Rs.1080 crores per year to the States for improvement of State Highway and Major District Roads. In addition, Rs.2500 crore per year are being given to the States under the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojna for the Rural Roads.
