Question : OCEANS 2022 Conference and Exposition

(a) whether the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and the National Institute of Ocean Technology are jointly hosting, OCEANS 2022 conference,a biannual event of global marine researchers,technologists, engineers, students and policymakers;
(b) if so, the details thereof and the outcome thereof; and
(c) whether delegates discussed on topics related to climate change, global warming, vagaries of weather, combating coastal erosion, marine pollution and micro-plastics with the theme as “Inspire-Innovate Sustain along with Observations of the U.N. Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development” which is attempting to reduce the impact of climate change through renewable energies and if so the details thereof along with the outcome thereof?

(a) & (b): The OCEANS 2022 conference was jointly organised from 21st to 24th February, 2022 on a hybrid mode by IIT Madras and National Institute of Ocean Technology. The Conference paved a platform for engineers, scientists and academicians to come together along with industry to formulate solutions for betterment of humankind with sustainable development on ocean resources.
c): A Panel Discussion with special address by Executive Secretary of Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO) on the topic of “Climate change solutions & the Ocean Decade” was held with moderators from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. The presentations and discussions were made on issues pertaining to ocean environment and engineering including climate change, coastal erosion, marine pollution and micro plastics. The discussions brought out recommendations for sustainable solutions driving the blue economy, protecting the oceans from over exploitation, importance of bilateral or multilateral collaborations, science-based decisions for sustainable management of ocean resources, etc.
