Question : BIO MEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT



(a) whether the Government have formulated any scheme for the management of bio-medical waste being discarded from the various hospitals;

(b) if so, the details of the funds allocated to each State for the said scheme,if any; and

(c) the names of the State Governments which have already put in place measures to manage such wastes?

MINISTER OF THE STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH & FAMILY WELFARE (SHRI GHULAM NABI AZAD)

(a) & (b): This Ministry was operating a scheme on Hospital Waste Management till the year 2004-05. Under this scheme financial assistance up to Rs.85.00 lakhs per hospital or Rs. 1.50 crores per State/UT was provided for development of infrastructure for bio-medical hospital wastes disposal in State Government Hospitals. Under this scheme, a total amount of Rs.24.28 crore has been released to 50 Hospitals/Medical Colleges/Institutions in 21 States/UTs. The details of the same are annexed.

(c) Health being a state subject such information is not maintained centrally.
