Question : DUMPING OF ELECTRONIC WASTE



(a) whether some countries are dumping electronic waste(E-wast

(e) in our country as reported in the `Rashtriya Sahara` dated September 12, 2006;

(b) whether high exemption on customs duty is the reason for dumping such waste in large quantity;

(c) whether the ASSOCHAM has presented a memorandum to the Prime Minister to prevent the same;

(d) if so, whether the Union Government is contemplating an amendment in the Customs Act for this purpose; and

(e) if so, the details thereof?

(a)to(e) The Government has received a representation from Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) recommending a suitable e-waste policy. Recommendations made by ASSOCHAM in this regard inter alia include review of customs duty exemption on import of second hand computers to charitable and educational institutions.

all representations received by the Government with respect to changes in customs duty are examined as part of annual budgetary exercise.
