Question : Haploidentical Stem Cell Transplants

Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:

(a) whether Haploidentical Stem Cell Transplant is recognised line of treatment to treat Thalassemia among children;

(b) whether AIIMS or any other hospitals under the administrative control of his Ministry have been using Haploidentical Stem Cell Transplant to treat Thalassemia among children;

(c) if so, the number of fatalities due to this line of treatment since the year 2012 in the country, State/UT and year-wise;

(d) whether there have been cases of fatalities in private hospitals due to this line of treatment among the Thalassemia patients in the country; and

(e) if so, the details of action taken against the doctors and private hospitals for administering this line of treatment to Thalassemia patients?

(a): All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi has informed that Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HCT) with a fully matched donor is curative and is currently accepted as standard of care for transplant-eligible Thalassemia children. However, it is still at clinical trials phase.
(b): So far information has been received from AIIMS, New Delhi. It does not offer Haploidentical transplants to Thalassemia patients.
(c) to (e): No data is available in this regard.
