STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION No.329 FOR 14TH AUGUST 2001 REGARDING EXTREMIST ORGANISATIONS OF NORTH-EAST:

(a) to (e): Yes, Sir. According to available information, there are camps in some of our neighbouring countries which are being used by many insurgent groups active in the North East as safe havens and sanctuaries and for training purposes. The Governments of Bangladesh, Bhutan and Myanmar have been sensitised in this regard. This matter has been taken up with these countries and they have assured that they would not allow undesirable elements to use their territory for activities prejudicial to the interests of India. Actionable intelligence is also being shared with these countries on a continuing basis. Other steps in this regard include gearing up of intelligence machinery and strengthening of the Border Security Force/Assam Rifles on the Indo-Bangladesh/Indo-Myanmar borders.
