Human Resource Development Minister, Shri Arjun Singh has said that we will have to tap all our resources to spread literacy in India. In this context National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is more relevant today. Shri Singh was speaking in the inauguration ceremony of the newly constituted office building of NIOS here at Noida today. He said that we are witnessing explosion of knowledge today. In order to make it relevant and meaningful, we should offer educational opportunities on anytime & anywhere basis. ‘The education should not be confined to class room alone’, he said.

The function was presided over by Secretary, School Education & Literacy, Shri Champak Chatterjee. In his address he said that NIOS should strive for, networking with the State Open schools, vocational education, teacher training and adult education. This approach will bring in more and more students in the open schooling system. ‘Union Ministry of Human Resource Development is planning to make necessary provision in this regard in the 11th Five Year Plan’, he said.

Chairman of the NIOS, Shri N.C. Pant in his welcome address said, that NIOS was set up with a purpose of providing education to special client groups like school drop-outs and marginalized groups such as rural youth, urban poor, girls and women, SC/ST, backward classes, minorities, differently able and ex-servicemen to universalize education. Shri D.S. Bisht, Secretary, NIOS gave the vote of thanks.

The most unique feature of the NIOS programmes is that they are available in as many as seven regional languages at secondary level and in three languages at senior secondary level. It has On-Demand Examination (ODE) facility also at secondary level in three states Delhi, Pune and recently it has started in Patna. As a result of NIOS efforts, about three lakh students get enrolled with NIOS every year.

Construction work on one of the two plots in Noida has been completed. In this building, Delhi Regional Centre of NIOS, International Centre for Training in Open Schooling (ICTOS), Guest House and Hostel for trainees etc. will be housed. Further, in this building, Mathematics, Science and Language Laboratories as well as Computer Laboratories etc. being set up. In these laboratories, Model practical CDs will be made and send to Study Centres. This will enhance the quality of learning of NIOS students.
