Vice President urges the youth to contribute constructively in eradication of social evils

The Vice President, Shri Bhairon Singh Shekhawat has urged the country’s youth to work for eradication of social evils like dowry and corruption in an organized manner so that the nation could achieve speedily the avowed goal of creating a society based on the equality of status and opportunity. He was addressing the youth volunteers of the National Service Scheme, who have gathered in the Capital from various parts of the country to participate in the Republic Day celebrations, here today.

Shri Shekhawat said that through the programmes like National Service Scheme, the youth of the country can form groups and visit the nearby rural areas and besides undertaking the social service activities can also ensure that the benefits of various government schemes for the poorer sections are reaching to the right persons. For this, he suggested that the Ministry of Education and other Union Ministries should provide to these schools necessary data and information about the various welfare schemes launched in their respective catchments areas.

The Vice President said that even after 59 years of independence, about 26 crore of our people are living below poverty line and it is necessary that all efforts are made for their upliftment. He underlined that by chenalizing the energy of the youth in an organized manner, we can achieve the desired success in these efforts.

The Vice President expressed his happiness over the fact that country’s youth have shown outstanding proficiency in fields like Information Technology and promoting scientific temper and have left a mark throughout the world. He said that no one can stop India from becoming a world power, if all the youth of the country work dedicatedly in developing their own personalities and thereby contributing towards the development of the nation as a whole. He congratulated the National Service Scheme volunteers for making significant contribution in social activities like family planning, environment protection, eradication of illiteracy and helping the people during national calamity like floods, earthquakes, etc.

The volunteers of the NSS presented a colourful cultural programme highlighting the unity and integrity of the nation. The Secretary of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, Shri S.Y. Qureshi and a number of senior officials and other dignitaries also were present on the occasion.
