The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) today accorded investment approval for the establishment of transmission system associated with Kudankulam Atomic Power Plant (2X 1000 MW) at a total cost of Rs. 1779.29 crore including an Interest During Construction (IDC) of Rs.71.41 crore. The completion schedule would be 26 months for the first phase of the evacuation system from Kudankulam to Tirunelveli; the second link Tirunelveli - Udumalpet has been proposed for execution and completion pari passu with the commissioning schedule of December 2007; and the third link till North Trichur; will be completed within 42 months from the date of investment approval of the project.
The Transmission Project would facilitate evacuation of power from Kudankulam project and further dispersal to various beneficiaries of the Southern Region.
Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) is setting up a nuclear power station at Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu with a total installed capacity as 4000 MW, to be developed in two stages of 2000 MW (2 x 1000 MW) each. As indicated by NPCIL, the 1st and 2nd units of 1000 MW each are scheduled for commissioning in May 2007 and December 2007 respectively. The constituent States of the Southern Region except Andhra Pradesh, are the beneficiaries of this project. The power from the Kudankulam project-I is proposed to be pooled at new 400/220 kV substation at Tirunelveli for further dispersal of power to the States of Kerala and Tamil Nadu through 400 kV D/C transmission lines.
