Tomorrow is the World Post Day. It was on October, 9 in the year 1874 the Universal Postal Union was established at Berne (Switzerland). The World Post Day was declared by the UPU Congress held in Tokyo, Japan in 1969. Since then, countries across the world participate annually in the celebrations. The Universal Postal Union (UPU) with its Headquarters in the Swiss capital Bern, is the second oldest international organisation after the International Telecommunications Union. The Posts in many countries use the event to introduce or promote new postal products and services.

The Department of Posts is celebrating the World Post Day, during this week by holding exhibitions, roadshows and customers' meet. India Post takes this opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to extend quality service at an affordable price. It has been the consistent endevour of the Department to meet social obligations as also the expectations of its esteemed customers. In addition to reaching to its customers during this week by way of exhibitions, etc., the Department has made special efforts to bring the underprivileged children to the post office to have an idea over the functioning of the department.

The UPU in cooperation with UNESCO has, for the past 35 years, been organising an International Letter-writing Competition for young people. This year's theme for the Letter-writing Competition is "The postal sector, an important partner in the information society". Most participating countries use World Post Day to award prizes to the winners of the competition.

The postal service forms part of the daily life of people all over the world. Even in the digital age, the Post remains, for millions of people, the most accessible means of communication and message delivery available. The postal services of the Universal Postal Union's 190 member countries form the largest physical distribution network in the world. More than six million postal employees work in over 700 000 postal outlets to ensure that some 430 billion mail items are processed and delivered each year to all corners of the world. At present, 117 UPU member countries use postcodes as part of their addressing systems.

Keeping pace with the changing communications market, Posts are increasingly using new communication and information technologies to move beyond what is traditionally regarded as their core postal business They are meeting higher customer expectations with an expanded range of products and value-added services.
