The Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Thiru T.R. Baalu has approved a total sum of Rs. 719.98 lakh for road improvement works on different stretches of National Highway-209 in the State of Tamil Nadu.
An amount of Rs. 482.53 lakh has been approved for Improvement of Riding Quality (IRQP) between Eachanari and Athupalam in Coimbatore district of NH-209. Similarly, an amount of Rs. 225.39 lakh has been approved for Improvement of Riding Quality (IRQP) Indira Nagar and Pasur in Nilgiri district of the same National Highway.
National Highways-209 (Dindigul-Bangalore road) connects Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and it is an important road and passing through the cotton city of Coimbatore and popular pilgrimage centers like Coimbatore, Pollachi, Palani and Bannari. Since this road is the shortest route to connect Coimbatore with Mysore and Bangalore, the vehicular traffic in this road is very heavy. Due to heavy volume of traffic in this stretch and also because of heavy rains during the recent monsoon season, the existing pavement has worn out badly and potholes have developed. Therefore, approval has been given to undertake road improvement works on dilapidated stretches.
An amount of Rs. 12.06 lakh has also been approved for carrying out the Feasibility Study/Detailed Engineering Survey for construction of Udumalpet Bypass on NH-209. Udumalpet town lies between km. 87/2-92/6 of NH-209. The stretch from km 90/0-91/8 lies in built-up area with one lakh population. The right of way is varying from 12 m to 15 m and heavy trucks lorries and buses find it difficult to negotiate through this narrow stretch, leading to frequent accidents. Agricultural products from nearby villages are taken to marketing centers through this road. Accordingly, it is proposed to provide a bypass to Udumalpet town.
