Steps to streamline coal supply

for Ministry of Coal | Date - 04-05-2005

The Coal Ministry in December, 2004 launched a drive for verification of documents to be submitted by industrial units of the non-core sector, for the purpose of ascertaining their credentials and proper utilization of coal. The exercise is stall under progress. Based on this drive, supplies to 721 units have been kept in abeyance. 2722 non-core sector units were found worthy of drawing coal from CIL and its subsidiaries in November 2004. But in April 2005, only 2001 units were drawing coal.

The Government and the coal companies take necessary corrective measures whenever reports of any irregularities in Coal Mining are received. Revision of Purchase Manual, Civil Engineering Manual and Contract Management Manual has helped eliminate the possibilities of any malpractice. Internal vigilance is stepped up to identify unscrupulous linked consumers by checking of their documents. Sale through e-auction has been introduced to eliminate/reduce the diversion of coal into black market. Assistance of State Governments is obtained to curb chances of pilferage of coal and illegal mining.

. This information was given by the Minister of State for Coal & Mines, Dr. Dasari Narayana Rao, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha, today.
