Skill Development of Rural Youth

Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Shri Rajiv Pratap Rudy has said that the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship has National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) to promote skill development by catalyzing creation of large, quality, for-profit vocational institutions.  The NSDC’s partners have faced the following challenges: 

 

  1. Trainees don’t want to enlist for fee based programmes of NSDC as the Govt ones are for free
  2. Ambition to improve livelihood reduces as subsidies or grants are received by a household
  3. Use of technology in rural areas is a challenge
  4. Finding good quality trainers is difficult
  5. Reluctance to move out from rural to urban surroundings without adequate wage incentive
  6. Lack of job opportunities locally which match the youth aspirations

In a written reply in the Lok Sabha today Shri Rudy said,

 

            He said, in addition, National Skill Development Agency (NSDA) has also noted issues like Social values attached to vocational training and lack of awareness, inability to pay for a particular skill course,  loss of wage in the event of attending a full time course etc.  In this regard, Details of the skilling targets and persons skilled during each of the last three years and the current year is as follows:

                * Achievement till end of October 2014

 

Shri Rudy said, Nehru Yova Kendra Sangathan and NSDC conducted a pilot program called YES – Youth Employability and Skills project.  NSDC, through its 6 Training Partners in 8 NE states and J&K trained 1325 youth from 2011 to 2013. They were provided Skills training with employment linkage & certification in different sectors like IT, Retail, Hospitality etc.
