The Government of India is going to set up soon a single window system to meet various requirements of Non-Resident Indians. Addressing a press conference here today at the Media Centre of Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas-2006, Shri Oscar Fernandes, Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs, said that the single window system is proposed to give a total and complete attention to the requirements of the NRIs. There has been encouraging response for the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Cards, with 8,000 NRIs from various countries already having applied for it. He said that all non-resident Indians except those residing in Bangladesh and Pakistan are eligible for overseas citizenship.
Replying to a question, Smt. J. Geetha Reddy, Andhra Pradesh Minister for Tourism and Major Industries, explained various initiatives taken by the Government of Andhra Pradesh to promote foreign investments. “A single window system was created for faster clearance of investment proposals. An Investment Board headed by the Chief Minister was constituted apart from giving various tax rebates and providing infrastructure facilities like power, water and roads for the proposed industries”, she said.
Shri Krishna Kumar, Secretary, Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, also participated in the briefing.
