The Seminar on “Pharmaceutical Pricing and Regulatory Framework for Affordable Prices” concluded yesterday in New Delhi after daylong deliberations. The speakers invited for the Seminar discussed diverse spectrum of experience and analysis of pricing regulation worldwide. Aspects relating to the supply chain, competition and supporting industry to grow were also discussed. Speaking at the concluding session, Dr. G S Sandhu Joint Secretary, Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals summed up the issues in Indian context that emerged from various technical sessions
Most of the speakers were in favour of promoting low cost generic medicines .The issues of linking price with quality of the drugs, prevalent huge variations in the trade margins, strengthening public procurement and distribution systems also emerged. The impact of price control on research work and growth of the industry were also the issues of concern. Dr Sandhu assured that the Government will work for rationalising the prices keeping in view the interests of all the stakeholders.
Organised jointly by the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals and Department for International Development (DFID), the seminar was attended by all stakeholders, international experts and policymakers
