Scheme for upgradation of full fare paying passengers to the next higher class

for Ministry of Railways | Date - 08-02-2006

The selection of passengers for upgradation under the scheme for upgradation of full fare paying passengers to the next higher class against the available vacant accommodation is done randomly through PRS at the time of preparation of the chart without any additional cost to the passenger. This is done to avoid any malpractice. The seats of the confirmed passengers in a particular train, who have been upgraded to the higher class, would be allotted to RAC/waitlisted passengers of that class. For instance, if ten passengers confirmed in sleeper class have been upgraded to 3AC class, the 10 vacant seats in sleeper class would be allotted to RAC/Waitlisted passengers in sleeper class. The waitlisted passengers, who will get confirmation, would otherwise have taken refunds.

The facility is automatically provided unless any passenger specifically refuses by giving the option “NO” at the time of filling the requisition form. In case, this option is not indicated at the time of booking, the passenger may get upgraded to AC class which he may not like. The original reservation in the sleeper class or first class is not available to him after the preparation of the chart, thereby causing him inconvenience. It is therefore essential that, at the time of booking, passengers indicate their options clearly.

The scheme was started with effect from 26th January 2006 in the two pairs of Rajdhani Express trains between Delhi and Mumbai and was subsequently extended to all the Rajdhani Express trains and 30 other trains with effect from 6th February 2006. The scheme has been implemented in order to improve customer satisfaction and to ensure optimum utilization of carrying capacity of the trains. This will result in improved revenues and generate goodwill for the railways.
