SMT. MEIRA KUMAR URGES CMs TO HOLD VIGILANCE AND MONITORING COMMITTEE MEETINGS UNDER THE POA ACT

The Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Smt. Meira Kumar has written letters to Chief Ministers of 16 States regarding implementation of Prevention of Atrocities (POA) and Protection of Civil Rights Acts. In her letter, the Minister has urged the State Governments to regularly hold meetings of the States Level Vigilance and Monitoring Committees under the chairmanship of Chief Ministers in respective States to review implementation POA (against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes) Act.

In the letter, Smt. Kumar said that in the absence of the minutes of the meetings of the Vigilance and Monitoring Committees, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has not been able to release Central Assistance under these Acts to the States for year 2006-07. The States which have not provided the minutes of the meetings of Vigilance and Monitoring Committee includes Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chattisgarh, Goa, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttaranchal, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
