Rural Employment under NREGA

NREGA is demand-driven Programme. Employment has been provided to 1.46 crore individuals and about 1 crore households have been benefited under the scheme upto October, 2006. The Act guarantees at least 100 days of wage employment in a financial year to every rural household whose adult member volunteer to do unskilled manual work. No allocations of funds are, therefore, made under the Act. Funds are released directly to the districts for implementation of the Act. Districts are entitled to get next instalment of funds after submitting a proposal to this Ministry alongwith utilization certificates showing at least 60% utilization of funds released earlier. Since NREGA is a demand-driven programme, no time schedule has been fixed under the Act regarding expenditure of funds.

This was stated by the Minister of State in the Ministry of Rural Development, Shri Chandra Sekhar Sahu in reply to a question in Rajya Sabha today.
