Role of media very important in creating awareness among people - Prof. Soz

Prof. Saifuddin Soz, the Union Minister for Water Resources has said that it is heartening to observe that the media agencies are associating themselves with issues related to environment, water and wildlife which are directly related to our well being. There is a very important role of media in creating awareness among the people. He was addressing at a function of the Fourth Centre for Media Studies Vatavaran Environment and Wildlife film Festival here today. He appreciated that entries in the festival have been invited for the theme “Water For All” which is indeed very topical.

Prof. Soz said that the participation of all stakeholders in water management has been well recognized. It has been our policy to give due importance to the management of the water resources with active participation and involvement of the stakeholders at all levels-planning, development as well as management of water resources for diverse uses should incorporate a participatory approach; by involving not only the various governmental agencies but also the users and other stakeholders, in an effective and decisive manner, in various aspects of planning, design, development and management of the water resources schemes.

Prof. Soz said that the traditional practices for water resources development and management have been adopted in many parts of our country. These practices are in complete harmony with the environment. The Film Media which has the capacity to reach and influence common people can contribute in a big way in popularizing sound traditional practices. Successful practices of water management being followed in various parts of the country can be brought out by the Film Media and thus help in populazing the cause of water conservation and environment and promote replication of best practices, he emphasized.
