Railway wagons are being manufactured by 12 well established wagon building units available both in public and private sectors. No decision has yet been taken for revival of these sick units. However, Government has decided for formation of Board for Reconstruction of PSEs (BRPSE). Any final decision of revival of the sick units would be taken by DHI after cases are analyzed by BRPSE and recommended for revival or otherwise.

The cumulative losses of the three sick PSEs Burn Standard Company Ltd., Braithwaite & Company Ltd. and Bharat Wagon & Engineering Co. Ltd as on March 31, 2004 is Rs. 887 crores (approx.) and no decision has been taken to waive their losses.

Assistance has been provided to these PSEs from time to time in the form of plan and non-plan support. For about 8.3 crores Plan assistance has been provided during 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 for modernization of these PSEs.
