Sports Ministry has revised the guidelines for selection procedures for award of ` (MAKA) Trophy’ on 2.12.2009 for more transparency and accountability and for promoting dope free sporting culture in Inter-University sports.
The existing guidelines for selection of MAKA Trophy were framed long back and needed suitable revision to meet the changed scenario in the sports arena.Furthermore, there arose some disputes between Universities over calculation of marks for selection of MAKA Trophy award.Recognising the need for fine tuning the existing procedure, constituted a Committee to streamline the selection procedures for award of MAKA Trophy. The Committee chaired by Secretary General, Association of Indian Universities ( examined the existing system of award of marks and recommended revised criteria for computation of marks based on the priority of sports and level of tournaments. The recommendations of the Committee were further examined in the Ministry with the help of experts. Based on the recommendations of the Review Committee and sports experts, existing guidelines for selection of MAKA Trophy award has been revised. Main features of the revised guidelines are under:

Ministry as in the case of other National Sports Awards;
Moreover, Ministry has released an ad-hoc grant of Rs.1.5 to Association of Indian Universities (AIU) for holding of and participating in national and international inter-University tournaments and also for organizing coaching camps/training of athletes of University teams.Financial assistance was earlier given to AIU for the aforesaid purpose under the scheme entitled ` assistance for Development of Sports Infrastructure in Universities and Colleges’ which was discontinued 1.4.2005.
With a view to broad basing and integrating of sports and physical fitness in colleges and Universities, the Ministry has now brought the (AIU) under the Scheme of Assistance to National Sports Federations () on 5.5.2009 for the aforesaid purpose.
Government instituted MAKA Trophy in 1956-57 as a tool for promoting of competitive sports amongst colleges and Universities.The top overall performing University in the Inter-University tournaments is given the MAKA Trophy, which is a rolling trophy along with cash prize. The cash prize has also been recently enhanced to Rs.10 , . 5 and Rs.3 for the Universities securing first, second and third position respectively in Inter-University tournaments.
