Lok Sabha

Improvement in passenger services is an ongoing exercise over Indian Railways. During the current financial year about 545 passenger carrying trains were augmented by more than 745 coaches and nearly 655 mail/express trains were speeded up. Moreover, 73 pairs of new trains were introduced, 50 pairs of trains were extended and frequency of 16 trains was increased despite severe resource constraints. These were achieved by rationalizing the time table, reviewing the existing maintenance practices, integration and standardization of rakes and review of engine and crew links.

Indian Railways, yet to meet huge freight loading potential for want of more infrastructure, rolling stock etc. Further, the projected demand that can be carried by Indian Railways by end of XIth five year plan is around 1100 Million Tonnes (MT). It can be achieved through increased operating efficiency and infrastructure development.

The wagon turn round reduced to 6.08 from 6.4 days compared to last year and Net Tonne Kilometers, one of the important operating indices has increased to 3106 from 2860 compared to last year. During current year Indian Railways is aiming at additional freight loading of almost 60 MT over last year through increased operating efficiency, like utilization of empty return ratio, better monitoring through the use of FOIS, etc.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Railways, Shri R.Velu in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today.
