Railways revenue freight exceeds target in April-January 2003-2004

Indian Railways transported an all time record 456.02 Million Tonnes (MTs) of revenue earning freight during the first ten months of the current financial year ending January 2004 as compared to 426.37 MTs of such traffic during the corresponding period of the previous year, registering an increase of 29.65 MTs. The target of 443.28 MTs for the period was exceeded by 12.74 MTs, indicating buoyancy in the core sector of the national economy.

The original target for 2003-2004 was 540 MTs, which has since been revised upwardly to 550 MTs.

During January 2004, the railways carried 48.87 MTs of revenue earning freight against the target of 47.14 MTs exceeding the target by 1.73 MTs. This is higher by 2.96 MTs over the corresponding month of the previous year, when the railways transported 46.91 MTs.
