The Railways have generated Rs. 13222.09 crore of revenue earnings from freight traffic during the first four months of the current financial year ending July 2006 as compared to Rs 11338.88 crore during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 16.61 per cent. Railways carried 233.21 million tonnes of freight traffic during April-July 2006 as compared to 211.35 million tonnes carried during the corresponding period last year, an increase of 10.34 per cent. The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) went up from 139462 million during April-July 2005 to 154082 million during April-July 2006, an increase of 10.48 per cent.
The earnings from freight traffic during the month of July 2006 was Rs. 3262.25 crore, compared to Rs. 2773.26 crore during the corresponding period last year showing an increase of 17.63 per cent. Railways carried 57.37 million tonnes (MTs) of freight traffic during the month as compared to 51.37 million tonnes of freight traffic during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 11.68 per cent. The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) went up from 33837 million during the month of July 2005 to 37202 million during May 2006, an increase of 9.94 per cent.
Of the total earnings during the month of July 2006, Rs. 1224.75 crore came from transportation of 24.77 million tonnes of coal, followed by Rs. 266.93 crore from 5.48 million tonnes of cement, Rs. 237.52 crore from 2.93 million tonnes of food grains, Rs. 234.58 crore from 2.81 million tonnes of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL), Rs. 206.32 crore from 2.90 million tonnes iron ore for exports, Rs. 179.34 crore from 1.72 million tonnes of iron & steel for steel plants, Rs. 158.41 crore from 4.41 million tonnes of raw material for steel plants, Rs. 134.25 crore from 2.50 million tonnes of fertilizers and Rs. 620.15 crore from 9.85 million tonnes of other goods.
