Railway freight revenue goes up by 9.92 per cent during April-May 2007

The Railways have generated Rs.7356.72 crore of revenue earnings from freight traffic during the months of April-May 2007 as compared to Rs. 6692.58 crore during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 9.92 per cent. Railways carried 124.76 million tonnes of freight traffic during April-May 2007 as compared to 117.67 million tonnes carried during the corresponding period last year, an increase of 6.03 per cent. The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) went up from 79135 million during the months of April-May 2006 to 81126 million during April-May 2007, an increase of 2.52 per cent.

The earnings from freight traffic during the month of May 2007 was Rs. 3752.91 crore, compared to Rs. 3364.69 crore during the corresponding period last year showing an increase of 11.54 per cent. Railways carried 63.85 million tonnes (MTs) of freight traffic during the month as compared to 59.58 million tonnes of freight traffic during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 7.17 per cent. The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) went up from 39715 million during the month of May 2006 to 41188 million during May 2007, an increase of 3.71 per cent.

Of the total earnings during the month of May 2007, Rs. 1484.17 crore came from transportation of 28.25 million tonnes of coal, followed by Rs. 323.88 crore from 6.32 million tonnes of cement, Rs. 275.77 crore from 2.98 million tonnes of foodgrains, Rs. 272.08 crore from 4.03 million tonnes iron ore for exports, Rs. 258.72 crore from 3.11 million tonnes of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL), Rs. 176.59 crore from 1.62 million tonnes of iron & steel for steel plants, Rs. 158.16 crore from 4.33 million tonnes of raw material for steel plants, Rs. 156.88 crore from 2.50 million tonnes of fertilizers and Rs. 646.66 crore from 10.71 million tonnes of other goods.
