Punctuality of Trains

for Planning Commission | Date - 17-03-2005

The punctuality performance of trains on Indian railways during the period January 2004 to February 2005 was 90.2% in Broad Gauge and 96.8% in Metre Gauge. Stating this in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today, the Minister of State for Railways Shri R. Velu informed the House that intensive chasing and round the clock monitoring at different levels i.e. Division, Zonal Headquarters and Railway Board are being undertaken regularly. In addition, punctuality drives both at Inspectorial and Officers level are also launched. Due to this, the punctuality of various trains has been satisfactory.

The Minister further informed the Members that reasons for late running of trains were agitations/bundhs, alarm chain pulling, miscreant activities, bad weather, flood, fog, landslide, cattle run over, late arrival of rake, engineering restrictions, human failures, grid failures, asset failures & human failures etc. During the period January 2004 to February 2005, 4530 staff have been taken up for detention to trains, Shri R. Velu added.
