The public sector coal major, Coal India Ltd. (CIL), produced 343.372 million tonnes (MT) of coal during 2005-06 and despatched 332.25 MT as against a production of 323.575 MT and despatch of 320.506 MT in the previous year. The company has taken a number of steps to increase indigenous production. 73 coal projects, including expansion/extension projects, at an estimated investment of Rs. 9920.84 crore, with an ultimate capacity of 149.185 million tonnes per year, have been sanctioned during 10th Plan period and are being developed . Other steps are : improvement in equipment utilization; timely implementation of projects; mechanization/modernization of existing mines and increasing productivity in both underground and open cast mines. Besides emergency coal production has been planned for increasing production in existing mines/projects.
