The Chief Election Commissioner, Shri T.S. Krishna Murthy accompanied by Shri B.B. Tandon and Shri N. Gopalaswami, Election Commissioners and other officials of the Election Commission of India met the President at 10.30 a.m. on 17th May, 2004. A copy of the notification issued by the Election Commission in terms of Section 73 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 containing the names of the members elected to the House of the People following the 14th General Elections was submitted by them to the President.

Shri Amar Singh, General Secretary, Samajwadi Party and Shri Ajit Singh, President, Rashtriya Lok Dal met the President today at 1.25 p.m.. Shri Amar Singh handed over a letter addressed to the President regarding the lending of support by the Samajwadi Party to the Congress party for Government formation. Shri Ajit Singh also handed over a separate letter to the President extending support of the Rashtriya Lok Dal to Smt. Sonia Gandhi for Prime Ministership of India.

Dr. Subramanian Swamy, President, Janata Party, Shri Suresh Pachouri, M.P. of Indian National Congress and Sushree Uma Bharti, Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh also called on the President during the day.

According to the results of the 14th General Elections, the President noted that the Indian National Congress has emerged as the single largest party and that this party in combination with its other pre-election allies constituted the largest political formation in the House. The President having noted that Smt. Sonia Gandhi has been elected the Leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party sent a letter at 5.00 p.m. today requesting her to meet him today evening or tomorrow at her convenience for discussions.
