President gives away Arjuna Awards and Dronacharya Awards

In a glittering ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan today, President, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil gave away sports and adventure awards.

Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award for the year 2006 was conferred upon Shri Manavjit Singh Sandhu for his outstanding performance and achievements in Shooting. He was presented a Citation and Rs.5 lakhs.

Shri R.D. Singh (Athletics, Paralympic Games), Shri Damodaran Chandralal (Boxing) and Shri Koneru Ashok (Chess) were conferred Dronacharya Award for the year 2006 in recognition of their meritorious achievements in the field of coaching. This award carries an amount of Rs. 3 lakhs, a Memento and a Citation.

Shri Jayanta Talukdar (Archery), Shri Kalayathumkuzhiyil Mathew Binu (Athletics), Shri B. Chetan Anand (Badminton), Shri Vijender (Boxing), Shri Pentala Harikrishana (Chess), Ms. Anjum Chopra (Cricket), Ms. Jyoti Sunita Kullu (Hockey), Shri Vijay Kumar (Shooting), Shri Saurav Ghosal (Squash), Shri Subhajit Saha (Table Tennis), Smt. Geeta Rani (Weightlifting), Ms. Geetika Jakhar (Wrestling), Shri Navneet Gautam (Kabaddi) and Shri Rahit Bhakar (Badminton - Disabled category were conferred Arjuna Award for the year 2006 in recognition of their outstanding achievements in the field of Sports. The Award carries an amount of Rs. 3 lakhs and a Citation. The President also gave away Dhyan Chand Award for the year 2007 to Shri Varinder Singh (Hockey), Shri Shamsher Singh (Kabaddi) and Shri Rajendra Singh (Wrestling) to honour these sportspersons for their contribution to sports by their performance and efforts to promote the sports.

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy 2005-2006 has been awarded to Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. The winner receives a cash prize of Rs.2 lakh and the MAKA Rolling Trophy alongwith a small replica of the MAKA Trophy for retention by the University.

The President also conferred Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards for the year 2006 to recognize the contribution and performance of the awardees in the field of adventure sports. Shri Gurdial Singh was given Life Time Achievement Award, Sub. Palden Giachho, was awarded for Land Adventure, Wg.Cdr. Motuku Indra Kanth Reddy got the award for Air Adventure while Shri Tapas Chowdhury was awarded for his performance in Water Adventure.
