Pollution control measures in NALCO

National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO), the public sector aluminium major of the Mines Ministry, during the year 2005-06, has taken a number of steps for pollution control, health and environment management and plantation of trees. It has adopted new technologies in its potlines and reduced Aluminium Fluoride consumption by 24 per cent in potline- III. 57,000 tonnes of ash of its captive power plant and refinery has been utilized in raising ash pond dykes, reclamation of low lying land, brick preparation and cement making. The company has planted 3,99,300 trees in its complexes during the year.

NALCO has rehabilitated nearly 15 ha mined out area by plantation. Certification audit for all 5 units for occupational health safety management system have been completed. The company has completed the work of upgrading ISO - 14001 to 2004 version. Some modification was carried out in de-fluoridation plant of smelter to improve its performance. To monitor fugitive emission in pot rooms one laser beam instrument has been procured and commissioned. It has completed raising the height of red mod pond with new garland drains. The work of raising the height of the ash pond of CPP and refinery is in progress.
