Phase 1 General Elections - 2004 : An overview : Election Backgrounder ‘52’
The countdown begins for the first phase of General Elections – 2004 with voting for 140 seats in 13 States and 3 Union Territories beginning on Tuesday. Voting for two seats in Tripura will be held on Thursday. In all 1115 candidates are in the fray for the 142 seats.

The constituency with the largest number of candidates is Jammu in Jammu and Kashmir where 26 candidates are in the fray followed by Patna where 23 candidates are in the fray.
Tura in Meghalaya and Godhra in Gujarat will witness a two-cornered contest. Six constituencies will witness a three-cornered contest. These include Anakapalli in Andhra Pradesh, Patan in Gujarat, Bijapur in Karnataka, Nowrangpur and Sambalpur in Orissa, and the constituency of Daman and Diu. The States of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand will witness the first Lok Sabha elections as new States.
