PM to inaugurate Global Convention on peace and nonviolence

The Prime Minister, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee will inaugurate the Global Convention on peace and non-violence being organised by Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti to discuss the present world scenario, and to bring about an enlightened global opinion for restoring Peace and non violence in the world on 31st January 2004.

The Global Convention would discuss the issues of strengthening of United Nations, and more particularly the Security Council, to effectively perform its responsibility for the preservation of peace and security in the world, disarmament, fighting terrorism and promoting universal brotherhood and harmony among all religious, ethnic, linguistic and other groups. Gandhian concept of World Peace and its practical value in the current context would taken up for in-depth discussion.

Eminent persons including former Heads of States and peace activists and scholars from across the world will take part in the two-day convention which includes former German President Mr. Richard Weizsaecker, former President of Indonesia Mr. Abdurrahman Wahid, former Tanzanian Prime Minister Dr. Salim Ahmed Salim, former Prime Minister of Nepal, Mr. Girija Prasad Koirala and Adademinions, scientists and eminent personalities.

After the inaugural session, there would be parallel sessions on the three broad themes of the Convention. Former Prime Minister, Shri I.K. Gujral would chair the session on ‘Strengthening of United Nations.; the former Tanzanian Prime Minister, Dr. Salim Ahmed Salim would be the co-chairman. The former German President, Mr. Richard Weizaecker would chair the session on ‘Disarmament, Peace, fighting terrorism and promoting universal brotherhood’, while eminent Gandhian Ms. Nirmala Deshpande would be the co-chair. The former Prime Minister of Indonesia, Mr. Abdurrahman Wahid would chair the session on ‘Gandhian Concept of World Peace’, and Acharya Ramamurthy would co-chair this session.

At the conclusion of the global Convention a Declaration will be adopted.
