The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, has condoled the death of Shri Banarsi Das Gupta, former Chief Minister of Haryana. In a condolence message, the Prime Minister said:
“I am deeply saddened to hear of the death of Shri Banarsi Das Gupta. In his passing away, we have lost a senior colleague in the Indian National Congress. He was widely loved and respected, particularly in Haryana, of which he was the Chief Minister for several years. He was an active participant in the Bhoodan Andolan and fought against social evils like dowry system and child marriage.
May providence give his family the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. I pray for the peace of the departed soul.”
