The Infrastructure and Project Monitoring Division, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation had on its monitor 333 Central Sector major projects each costing Rs.100 crore and above, as on 31st January this year. Of these, 45 were mega projects each costing Rs.1000 crore and above.
The latest Exception Report of the Ministry says, the total anticipated cost of these projects amounted to Rs.2,49,351.42 crore, against the original sanctioned cost of Rs.2,28,442.34 crore. The cost overrun thus experienced in these projects was about Rs.20, 909 crore i.e. 9.2 percentage increase.
The Report also said that the expenditure incurred on these projects upto January was of the order of Rs.95858.76 crore, which works out to be 38.4 per cent of the total anticipated cost. The Exception Report calling for urgent action on the part of the concerned administrative ministries and departments, wanted remedial measures to be taken in order to prevent further slippages in these major projects.
Of the total projects, 130 were delayed as per information available as on date 31st January this year. 16 were ahead of schedule, 68 on schedule, 99 without new dates of commissioning and the remaining 20 figured without original date of commissioning. The time overrun experienced in respect of these projects, even with revised dates of commissioning, ranged between one to 168 months. Six projects continue to figure with delays of exceptional order.
