for Ministry of Rural Development | Date - 02-03-2007

LOK SABHA

24,44,881 no.’s of Self Help Groups (SHGs) have been formed under Swarnjayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY) upto December, 2006, since the inception of the scheme from April 1,1999. 33,04,789 individual Swrozgaris have been assisted under the scheme during the same period. The Number of SHGs categorized as Grade I, II and the number of SHGs waiting for economic assistance after passing Grade II is attached in Annexure.

The number of SHGs that have passed the Grade – II stage and are awaiting economic assistance is 3,24,526. Lack of sufficient funds under the SGSY is the main reason for not being able to extend economic assistance to such SHGs.

The Ministry of Rural Development has requested the Ministry of Finance and the Planning Commission for enhancing the budget provision under SGSY to clear the backlog of the past years. For the first year (2007-08) of the XIth plan period the allocation for the SGSY programme has increased by Rs.600 crore. The enhanced allocation is expected to clear the backlog to an extent.

This was stated by Dr. Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, Minister of Rural Development in reply to an unstarred question in the Lok Sabha today.
