Modernisation of Bokaro Steel Plant

for Ministry of Steel | Date - 05-05-2006

The Bokaro Steel Plant is now on a fast track of modernization.

To keep pace with the latest trends in steel making, several wings of the plant have been upgraded. These include the Continuous Casting Machines and Steel Refining Unit. New features have been introduced to improve the plant’s output. The latest reheating technology has replaced the less efficient pusher type furnaces. A new hydraulic coiler has been added and two of the existing ones revamped. The Hot Strip Mill has been fully modernized. As a result, the Bokaro Steel Plant is producing the best quality hot rolled products. They have been well accepted in the global market. Presently, the plant is producing 4.36 million tones of liquid steel.

The Bokaro Steel Plant is hailed as the country’s first indigenous steel plant in terms of equipment, material and know-how. The first phase of its production began with ingot steel on October 2, 1972. Since then all its units have been commissioned for optimum output in every sphere of its activity.

As an integral part of SAIL, the plant is producing hot rolled coils, hot rolled plates, hot rolled sheets, cold rolled coils, cold rolled sheets, tin mill black plates and galvanised plain and corrugated sheets.

The Bokaro Steel Plant provides a strong raw material base for a variety of modern engineering industries including automobile, pipe and tube, LPG cylinder and barrel.
