Minister of State in Ministry of Finance, Shri S.S. Palanimanickam affirmed in Rajya Sabha today that Government is proposing to mint a Rs. 10 coin. The new coins of Rs. 10 will be bi-metallic and are expected to be lifted by the Reserve Bank of India for circulation during 2006-2007. Minting of new Rs. 10 coin will depend on the indent from the Reserve Bank of India. There is no reported shortage of 25 and 50 paise coins. He said this, in reply to a question by Smt. Kum Kum Rai.
In reply to another question raised by Shri Raju Parmar, the Minister said that Government have also decided to issue new design coins in the denominations of Rs. 1, Rs. 2, Rs. 5 and Rs. 10 which are expected to be issued next year. As per information received from the RBI, new series of bank notes with additional/new security features are likely to be issued shortly.
