for Ministry of Steel | Date - 28-06-2005

There has been marked increase in total production of pig iron during April-May,2005 and it has been estimated to the tune of 6 lakh tonnes as against the production of 4.59 lakh tonnes (provisional) during the same period last year, thus showing an increase of 30.71 per cent.

Similarly, the consumption of pig iron during the period has shown an increase of 23.25 per cent . The total consumption of pig iron stands to the tune of 5.3 lakh tones during April-May,2005 as compared to 4.3 lakh tonnes during the corresponding period last year.

This apparent increase in production as well as consumption of pig iron is indicative of increased demand from the casting industry since February,2005 and also the fact that exports of castings have become more competitive.
