Madurai Kamaraj University bags First Prize in Youth Parliament competition

Smt. Suryakanta Patil, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Rural Development gave away prizes to the winners of the 7th Youth Parliament Competition, 2004-2005 for Universities today. The students of Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, Tamil Nadu bagged the first prize among 27 competitors. Besides, Merit Trophies were awarded to six Universities standing first in their respective Groups. These are, M. V. Shramjeevi College, Udaipur, Rajasthan (Rajasthan Vidyapeeth) (Group A), Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University, Muzzaffarpur, Bihar (Group B), University of Mumbai, Mumbai, Maharashtra (Group C), National Institute of Technology, silchar, Assam (Group D), Mangalore University, Mangalore, Dakshina Kannada Distt., Karnataka (Group E) and Annamalai University, Annamalainagar, Tamil Nadu (Group F).

In her remarks, Smt. Patil said the participation and performance of the students in the Youth Parliament competition convinces that our democratic system will be safe and strong in the hands of our younger generations. It is vital that every citizen understands the working of Parliamentary Democracy and its Institutions, she added. It is our prime duty to continue to strive hard for the maintenance of the dignity, unity and integrity of this vast and great nation by serving the cause of the leaders of tomorrow and on them will lie the responsibility of upholding the best traditions of our democracy at all costs. She expressed the hope that the scheme of Youth Parliament will contribute towards qualities of discipline, leadership, tolerance and concern for the society amongst students.

The Youth Parliament Scheme aims at inculcating among the younger generation the spirit of self-discipline, tolerance of diverse opinion, righteous expression of views and other virtues of democratic way of life. Besides, the scheme also acquaints the students with the practices and procedures of Parliament, techniques of discussion and debate and develops in them the quality of leadership. Teams of judges, which included MPs/Ex-MPs along with officers of the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and academicians of repute from non-participating institutions evaluated the competition.
