MECON : A Pioneer in ECO-Friendly Technology Development

The Metallurgical & Engineering Consultants (India) Limited (MECON Ltd.), the Ranchi based engineering consultancy outfit is a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Steel.  It was set up to reduce dependence on foreign engineering consultants by building indigenous capability in design & engineering. During its existence of past four decades, besides executing varied type engineering/consultancy assignments, MECON has been a pioneer in acquiring and assimilating newer technologies for various sectors of the Indian Industry. MECON is also the first engineering and consultancy organisation in India to receive the ISO 9001 certification.

It is one of the premier multi disciplinary design, engineering, consultancy and contracting organization in the field of iron & steel, chemicals, refineries & petrochemicals, power, roads & highways, water management, ports & harbours, gas & oil, pipelines, non-ferrous, mining, general engineering and other related/diversified areas with extensive overseas experience.

Fields of Activity

MECON has 4 SBU (Metals, Power, Oil & Gas, Infrastructure), technological divisions and engineering divisions, special services division, equipment and system design divisions, engineering and project site offices in India to carry out specialised services in its diverse field of activities.  Its Environmental Engineering Division works closely with in-house process technologists in the fields of ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, power, fuels and furnaces, coal and chemicals, petro-chemicals, infrastructures etc. in evolving environmentally clean technologies.  Even before ratification of Kyoto Protocol by India, MECON has developed considerable experience through working on conventional and Green House Gas (GHG) emission reduction projects of power sector under World Bank assignments.  This has been done under the project called EIPS (Environment Issues in the Power Sector) for States of Bihar, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, U.P., Rajasthan and Karnataka.  In undivided Bihar, MECON has prepared GHG overlay technique on the power sector reform proposal.  For the State of Karnataka, MECON was selected as a consultant to Deptt. of Energy and Power Reform by the World Bank for Environmental Assessment of Power Sector Restructuring Programme in Karnataka in which MECON predicted the emission of conventional pollutants and GHG upto year 2010 on a preliminary basis.  For these states MECON has organized workshops on disseminating information gathered through the working experience of such projects.

In the changing scenario world has become more cautious for energy cost, obviously energy conservation is the basic need in all fronts.MECON is engaged in formulating various energy conservation measures to reduce the energy costs and also to make it environment friendly. MECON has also carried out Energy auditing of Industries.               

Expertise

Over the years company has developed expertise in turnkey execution of projects on single point responsibility basis.  It also renders specialized services which normally engineering consultants do not provide.  These are preparation of manufacturing and fabrication drawings, up-scaling of pilot plant, plant health studies, renovation moderation & upgrading of existing plant etc.

This leading consulting organization has experts in Power plant, Blast Furnace, Coke oven, Environmental engineering, Non Ferrous, Rolling mills, Steel Melting Shop, Infrastructure, Oil & Gas etc.  In addition to these MECON has a number of certified Energy Auditors accredited by Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under Ministry of Power.

  MECON have signed number of Memoranda of Understanding to meet the technological requirements for wide spectrum of industries and infrastructure development projects. The scope of service includes the entire gamut of work relating to setting up of projects in green as well as brown fields from concept to commissioning.

In an effort to enable it to offer state of the art technology, MECON has signed a cooperation agreement with internationally renowned consultancy organisation, M/s AF – Enprima of Finland for joint working in power sector consultancy in India.  .

Clientele

Some of its well known clients include National Aluminum Company (NALCO), Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB), and various departments and Ministries of Government of India, besides private sector companies like Jindal Steel & Power, Bhushan Steel and Adhunik Group.

 MECON has bagged contracts for 2 x 500 MW Power Plant in Tamil Nadu, being promoted jointly by the Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) and the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board.  MECON will provide detailed engineering and consultancy from concept to commissioning for two units of 500 MW each to be set up at Tuticorin.  This is for the first time that MECON will provide consultancy for power projects of 500 MW capacity.   Earlier MECON had also provided similar service to the NLC for their 2 x 210 MW expansion programme, which was successfully completed in 2003.

            With the business in power sector rising, MECON is preparing a road map to develop its Strategic Business Unit further.  The power plant division at Ranchi is being augmented with more resources and latest design softwares to facilitate better and timely services to the valued customers. Growing global environmental concerns will further boost the business opportunities for the company.
