Loss of Railways caused by increase in price of steel

Railways have to incur an estimated extra expenditure of about Rs. 400 crores on procurement of steel due to increase in price of steel.

There is no substitute of steel for manufacturing of wagons. However, it has been decided to manufacture aluminium wagons, in a limited way. 750 Four Wheelers Units of Aluminium wagon are planned for manufacture during 2005-2006.

This information was given by the Minister for Railways Shri Lalu Prasad in reply to a question from Shri P.K. Maheshwari in the Rajya Sabha today.
