Indo-Bangladesh talks on Water Resources Sector concludes

A meeting of the Secretaries of Water Resources of India and Bangladesh was held on August 7 - 8, 2007 to discuss pending issues between both the countries related to Water Resources Sector. The Indian delegation was led by Smt. Gauri Chatterji, Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India. The Bangladesh delegation was led by Mr. Syed Mohammad Zobaer, Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.

In pursuance of directions of 36th meeting of the Indo-Bangladesh Joint Rivers Commission (JRC), held in September, 2005 both sides discussed and exchanged the principles for sharing of waters of Teesta and other common rivers which would be put up before JRC for further consideration. It was agreed that further details would be worked out at Technical level headed by the Members, JRC of the two countries at the earliest for consideration in the next JRC meeting.

Both sides also discussed other issues relating to River Bank Protection works, Lift Irrigation Schemes, Drinking Water Supply schemes on common border rivers and Dredging of river Ichamati in common reach. Both sides agreed to exchange the constructions details to execute these works in order to bring transparency and remove apprehensions from either side and recommended to Joint River Commission for consideration.

Both sides expressed satisfaction on the outcome of the meeting. The leader of the Bangladesh delegation thanked the leader of the Indian delegation for the gracious hospitality accorded to him and his delegation members.
