The Ministry of Youth Affairs and sports instituted the    IGNSS award in 1993-94, on the silver jubilee year of the setting up of the NSS, the largest Student Youth Organization in the country.  This award recognizes the voluntary service rendered by the NSS volunteers, Program Officers, NSS units and the University/+ 2 Councils while they are studying in schools and colleges.

In addition to the cash award the award winners are presented with a trophy/medal and a scroll/certificate in the National Award Ceremony.  It is expected that these awards will encourage not only the NSS volunteers but also all other functionaries to work with more dedication for the development of the community and the nation as a whole.

For the first time in the history of IGNSS Award, one award to volunteers is  being presented posthumously to Late Shri Jagdish, a volunteer from National Pre-University College, Barko , Karnataka  who died  during a special camp of NSS in  Karnataka.  He was   trying to plug a breach in a river, which was inundated during flood and gave his life, while doing social service.  The award is being received by Shri Vittal Markala, his 75 year old father.
