Indian Railways carry out special ticket checking drives

The ticket checking staff of Indian Railways conducted 15.55 lakh checks during the period April, 2004 to May, 2005 including flying squad in which 161.14 lakh persons were apprehended traveling without ticket/with improper ticket including unbooked luggage and the railway dues amounting to Rs. 260.74 cores were realized.

Besides regular checks some of the measures taken are: -

The minimum penalty for ticketless/irregular travel has been enhanced to Rs. 250/- from Rs. 50/- with effect from 1.7.2004.

Special checks are conducted in association with Police and Railway Magistrates.

Ambush Checks, Fortress Checks, Cross Country Checks and Replacement Checks etc. are conducted from time to time.

Intensive Check Post Scheme has been introduced for effectively controlling the ticketless/irregular traveling as well as ticketing frauds.

Railway officers are accountable for an effective ticket checking so as to curb ticketless travel and enhance the passenger earning.

The above information was given by the Minister of state for Railways Shri R. Velu in written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today.
